Maria T. Stewart, 93, of Stamford passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at Stamford Hospital. She was born in New York City on January 16, 1925 to the late Filippo and Maria Socci Farina.
Maria was a registered nurse at Stamford Hospital for 28 years before her retirement in 1981, then at the Red Cross from 1983-1990. She was a Korean War Era Veteran with the Army as a Sergeant from 1950-1951. Maria was a member of the Secular Franciscan Order, the American Legion, the Catholic Daughters and the Columbiettes.
She is survived by her loving children, Cora Martino and her husband Gene of Stamford, Patricia Stewart Barcello of Stamford, Linda Fiorito of Norwalk and Robert T. Stewart and his wife Carol Matousek of So. Salem, NY, and a sister Josephine Capporizzo of FL. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Danielle, Christina and Lauren Santagata and her husband Austin Felis, and Renee Santagata , Larry Barcello and his wife Shelly, Elise and Victoria Fiorito, as well as four great grandchildren, Juniper and Scarlett Felis and Anastasias and Alexnadria Arvanitakis.
Besides her parents, Maria was predeceased by her husband Wallace B. Stewart in 2008, five sisters, Cherbina Farina, Florence Bourbigot, Rose Blois, Louise Proffitt and Anna Musemicci and two brothers, Anthony and Michael Farina.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at 9:00 AM for a Latin Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 9:30 AM at The Basilica of St. John the Evangelist RC Church, 279 Atlantic Street, Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien with full Military Honors. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made in Maria’s memory to the Humane Society of the United States, 1255 23rd Street, NW, Suite 450, Washington, DC 20037
