Obituary for Hossein Samai

Hossein Samai
Dr. Hossein Samai, 81, a resident of New Canaan for over 35 years, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Thursday, June 7th, 2018.

Hossein was born in the city of Arak, Iran, on August 13, 1936, son of the late Taghi and Bilquse Samai.

He graduated from medical school at the University of Tehran in 1962 and then emigrated from Iran to the United States. After completing his residency at Hartford’s St. Francis Hospital, he joined the medical staff at Norwalk Hospital, and later Albert Einstein Medical Center in New York. His most joyous professional years occurred when he was recruited out of retirement to work as a family practitioner. He retired from medicine at age 75.

Hossein is survived by his loving wife, Ellen Samai, of New Canaan, his son Rommie Samai and daughter in-law, Amanda, of Wilton, son Cyrus Samai and daughter in-law, Emily, of Atlanta, stepdaughter April Zalenski and spouse, James, of Fairfield, stepson David Pramer Jr. and spouse, Amy, of Fairfield. Dr. Samai also is survived by his cherished grandchildren: Avery, Sofia, Isabel, and Zachary Samai, David Pramer III, and Alexa Zalenski.

Hossein loved the outdoors. He was an avid tennis player who was always seeking a match at Mead Park, a year-round swimmer at the YMCA, and in the winter frequented the paddle tennis courts at Waveny. He relished the camaraderie and friendship amongst his peers at the Senior Men’s Club that met each Friday at St. Mark’s church. Hossein also enjoyed long walks through the Bird Sanctuary with his wife Ellen that usually included a visit to Starbucks and perusal of the New York Times. Despite growing up in a country without baseball, Hossein enthusiastically supported the New York Yankees. Most of all, he cherished spending time with his immediate and extended family, and his friends.

A Celebration of Life was held on Monday, June 11th, 2018 at the Roger Sherman Inn.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Dr. Samai’s memory to the New Canaan Recreation Department, Attn: Steve Benko, Special Projects Fund, PO Box 852, New Canaan, CT 06840, OR to the American Brain Tumor Association, 8550 W. Bryn Mawr Ave. Ste 550, Chicago, IL 6063 ABTA.org
