Obituary for George L. Scarano, Jr.

George L. Scarano, Jr. of Bethel, CT and a former resident of Stamford passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 21, 2018. He was born in Stamford on February 17, 1942 to the late George L. Scarano, Sr. and Margaret (Candelmo) Scarano.

George was a graduate of Stamford High School. He was honorably discharged from the US Army in 1969. He served in the 2D Battalion, 192D Artillery. He was employed for several years at Pitney Bowes in Stamford. He then joined the Stamford Police Department in 1970. During his years of service in the Uniformed Patrol Department he was a member of the Honor Guard Unit and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team. He also worked in the Detectives’ Office, the Motorcycle Squad and the Marine Division. He was awarded the Troy-McNamara Memorial Award for Policeman of the Year in 1976. He had received numerous commendations for excellent arrests and bravery. He made over 54 felony arrests in 1976. He retired from the Stamford Police Department after 45 years of service.

George is survived by his loving wife, Deborah Coleman, his brother, Louis Scarano, Sr. and his wife, Marge of SC and his sister, Dolores Binder, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his brother, James Scarano, Sr.

A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory,104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 9:40 AM a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s RC Church, 566 Elm Street Stamford. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 from 4:00-8:00 PM. Interment will be private.

The family requests that donations be made in George’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105
