Obituary for Harry Cartsounis

Harry Cartsounis, 86, a former native of Stamford, Windsor Locks, and Suffield, CT, passed away peacefully in his sleep on a snowy winter morning, Thursday, January 4, 2018. Born on July 25, 1931, in Greenwich, CT, he was the son of the late John and Efthimia “Ethel” (Papageorgiou) Cartsounis. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, James, George, and Nicholas.
Harry served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War era. In his youth, he was an avid basketball player with the YMCA, the Stamford Jewish Community Center, and other local teams, and he was very proud to have scrimmaged against NBA player, Bob Cousy. He also enjoyed playing tennis, billiards, ping pong, and horseshoes. A favorite pastime was watching the NY Giants and the UCONN Women’s basketball. Harry loved teaching the game of checkers to his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed discretely helping others in need and offering advice (to anyone who would listen) about the savings and reception quality of over-the-air TV. He prided himself in clipping coupons to save on his grocery bill, and he found great happiness giving his ten-dollar bonus savings coupons to strangers.
With his comforting voice and pleasant demeanor, he worked the front desk at the Windsor Locks Post Office and received one of the only awards given by the W.L. postmaster during his years of service. In his generous spirit, his fellow co-workers were happily surprised when he threw a pizza party to share his good fortune.
Harry is survived by his lifelong friend and former wife, Jeanne (LaCroix) Cartsounis; his two daughters, Gwenn Marie Morrow, and her husband Bruce Morrow of Swansea, MA; Kimberly Joy Caterino, and her husband William of East Granby, CT; a son, Donald Cartsounis and his wife, Angela, of Windsor Locks, CT. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Brandy Jean, Billy, Bianca, Donald Henry, and James; one great grandchild, Celestina; his nephew, Gary; and nieces, Gail, Barbara, and Donna.
Family and friends may call at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1230 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from 10:00 AM-11:00 AM, with a Funeral Service to be celebrated at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Woodland Cemetery, Woodland Place, Stamford.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Harry’s name to the Disabled American Veterans, P. O. Box 310909, Newington, CT 06131.
