Americo ""Gus""  Guassardo
Americo “Gus” Guassardo, 89, a lifelong resident of Stamford passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at the Atria of Stamford. He was born in Stamford on June 27, 1927 to the late Marco and Delfina Ancornaro Guassardo.
Gus attended Springdale School, Burdick School and was a graduate of Stamford High School, Class of 1945. Gus served in the US Army and was stationed in Austria. He was a past member of the Old Timers Association, being honored in 1992, as well as being named President in 1999. He was also a member of the Church of St. Cecilia, where he was an usher at the 7:30PM Mass for over fifty years. He was also the past Vice President of the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department and a member of its marching band. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Lafayette Council #41, where he was a 3rd and 4th Degree Knight; a member of the VFW Post 9617; State Street Debating Society; the Glenbrook Athletic Club and the AARP. Gus was also the General Manager for the Knights of Columbus Baseball Team and the Stamford Twilight League in the 1950’s. Gus loved the New York Yankees, the New York Giants, Notre Dame, and the Stamford Black Knights. In his younger years, Gus played basketball, Baseball and softball. Gus was a mail carrier for the US Postal Service for 36 years before retiring in 1986, then went to work for Ed Clark’s Trophies and Plaques of Stamford where he was employed for 20 years. Gus was an avid bowler and in his later years enjoyed golfing at the E. Gaynor Brennan Municipal Golf Course (Hubbard Heights) as well as seen around Stamford with his many friends and extended family during his lifetime. He also loved playing his cymbals every chance he got, and will also be remembered for his recital of “The Night Before Christmas”.
Gus is survived by his five godchildren, Randy Robotti, Bridget Ormand Kopek, John Walsh, III, Maria Tosches-Hitt and Kris-Ann Vogel, his loyal friends Marguerite and Ernie Mammone, and his caring aides AnnMarie, Maxine, and Juanita, as well as many lifetime friends.
Besides his parents, Gus was predeceased by his sister Mary Tedesco.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 3rd, 2017 at 10:00 AM at the Church of St. Cecilia, 1184 Newfield Avenue, Stamford. Interment will follow at St. John’s Cemetery, Darien. Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Thursday, March 2nd, 2017 from 4:00-8:00 PM.
