Giovanni Califano, 98, of Stamford passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Friday, March 20, 2015 at Regency of Stamford. He was born in Ponza, Italy to the late Antonio and Raffaela DeLuca Califano.
Giovanni was a proprietor of a New York Deli until 1975. He was a devoted and loving father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving sons Biagio “Benny”Califano and his wife Maria and Silverio Califano all of Stamford. Also surviving is his daughter-in-law Mimma Califano of Stamford and four grandchildren Maria, John, Michael and Marco Califano.
Besides his parents, Giovanni is predeceased by his wife Maria Pacifico Califano and his son Tony “Nino” Califano.
A funeral procession will be leaving the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford at 9:50AM on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at St. Benedict’s RC Church, 1 St. Benedict Circle, Stamford at 10:30AM. Entombment will follow at Ferncliff Mausoleum, Hartsdale, NY. Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, March 23, 2015 from 4:00-9:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Giovanni’s memory to The Carl & Dorothy Bennett Cancer Center, 34 Shelburne Road, Stamford, CT 06904.
