Anthony Yurkas, 91, of Stamford passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, March 17, 2015. He was born in Jurovo, Croatia on March 21, 1923 to the late John and Mary Zvon Yurkas.
Anthony graduated from J.M Wright Technical School and worked for Electrolux Corporation in Old Greenwich, CT for 44 years as a Mechanical Engineer. He was a WWII Navy Veteran, Machinist Mate Third Class. He was a member of the Croatian Fraternal Union, Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Industrial Club. He was an avid golfer and bowler, and in his earlier years a tremendous softball player. Anthony was an amazing furniture maker and a true Mr.Fix It who enjoyed maintaining his home and taking care of his car. He dearly and deeply loved his family, and Molly his canine companion.
He is survived by his loving children, Carolyn Yurkas Swebilius and her husband Carl of Orange, CT, Marianne Yurkas Kelly and her husband Brian of So. Salem, NY, John Yurkas and his wife Patty of Stamford, his loving grandchildren, John Evanson, William Yurkas, Sean and Kelly Morgan. He is also survived by his brother Frank Yurkas and his wife Lucille of Stamford and his sister Lucille Bray of Washington, GA, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Anthony was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Anne Cashmere Yurkas.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Friday, March 20, 2015 from 4:00-8:00 PM with a prayer service to be celebrated at 5:00 PM. A funeral procession will be leaving the funeral at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 21, 2015 for a graveside service at 11:00 AM at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien.
