Obituary for Werner Robert Dettmer

Werner Robert Dettmer, 79, of Stamford, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, April 23, 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Werner was born in Bronx, NY on September 13, 1941 to the late Fred and Emma Giesen Dettmer.
Werner was born and raised in the Bronx, having been a stand-out football and soccer player. He loved to race cars, owned 53 different motorcycles, as well as several boats. Werner turned down a full-ride scholarship to Penn State, to join the U.S. Navy. He served four years of active duty on the USS Intrepid during the Cuban Missile Crisis. At 22 years of age, he became a New York State Trooper, then going to New York City Department of Sanitation whilst working at Higgs Marina in the Bronx. Werner then retired only to start a new career, as a security guard with the Lithographers Union Local #1 in New York City, he then fully retired at the age of 71. Werner was strong both physically and mentally and will always be remembered as an on-time hard-worker.
Werner is survived by his former wife and mother of his two children, Pamela Lichtenberger Dettmer, his son Dr. Rob Dettmer and his wife Jaimee, of Stamford, his daughter Renee Mellas and her husband Greg, of New Canaan, his sister Debbie Dettmer, of Boca Raton, FL, as well as his beloved grandchildren Lauren, Brooke, Sydney, Kate and Scott.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, TODAY Saturday, April 24, 2021 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 PM, with Father Peter Smolik, pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea RC Church, officiating. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Werner’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Rd. Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
