Obituary for Peter Demetros

On Christmas Eve our dad, Peter Demetros, passed away peacefully in his sleep. Peter was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He lived each day for his family, his country and his God. He was a devoted and adoring husband for 66 years to our mom Helen who died several years ago.

His roots came from his parents Evangeline and Angelo Demetros, both immigrants from Greece who came to start a new life in America. As an only child, he adored them and to this day as he reminisced, he would get choked up with emotion.

Like so many of his generation he fought for his country in the Philippines as a ST. SGT in the US Army. After his service he graduated from Bentley College and went on to a wonderful career with the American Thread Company for over 40 years. After retiring from American Thread, he continued working until the age of 74 when he was finally convinced to fully retire.

He enjoyed retirement as a devoted husband and grandfather, never too far away from our mom. Those who knew them well called them the "dancing couple", because if the music was playing, they were dancing together effortlessly.

Peter had a love for his church community and spent countless hours at the Church of the Archangels in many different roles, always a cheerful volunteer to serve food, set up tables or clean up.

He never missed an event for his grandkids and spent hours in the stands at baseball, basketball, volleyball or softball games throughout Fairfield county.

Peter was quite a character, always quick witted and the life of the party, but he was one you could always count on to be there in a time of need.

In his later years he would reflect back and always fretted that he was not leaving us with vast amounts of wealth or as he would say a chain of Greek pizza joints. But what he left us with was so much more important. He taught us all how to live our lives the right way, to do the right thing always, not when it was convenient, to respect all, no matter race, creed or stature in life. But most importantly for his sons and grandsons the respect we must always show to our wives, daughters and all women. That was non-negotiable with our Dad.

He instilled in us that you get nothing for free, you earn what you worked hard for, and that you move through life the right way not the easy way.

Peter will be missed by many but for those he touched along the way the lessons he taught us each day of his life, will live on for generations to come.

Due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, all services for Peter will be limited to family only. If you would like to attend the services virtually, you may log into a web stream of the viewing and funeral service via Facebook live at https://www.facebook.com/archangelsGOC/live.
