Obituary for Apostolos F. Kyriakoudis

Apostolos F. Kyriakoudis, 86, of Washington, D.C. died on January 12, 2020.
He was the firstborn son to Fotios A. Kyriakoudis & Anna Theodorides Kyriakoudis. Born on May 29, 1933 in Piraeus, Greece.
He was veteran of the Royal Hellenic Navy and received diplomas from the Royal Technical College in Manchester and the University of London in Textile Designing, Printing, Coloring & Weaving.
He returned to Greece, and in 1959 met the love of his life--an American girl, Mary Tavlarides, at a name day party hosted by his cousin. They were married (eloped) a few months later by a Greek Orthodox priest and two witnesses. They settled in Mary’s hometown of Stamford, Connecticut.
Apostolos served on the Church Council of his beloved Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church for many years and was instrumental in the relocation of the Church from the south end to the property on Newfield Avenue.
Known professionally as Paul Kaye, he worked in the textile industry as a Design, Development & Manufacturing Executive. After 20 years, he retired from the corporate world to become an entrepreneur. He and Mary opened Newfield Restaurant & Pizza in 1980. In 1992, they sold the restaurant and moved to Washington DC with their adult children to start their second successful venture, Melio’s Restaurant. Apostolos and Mary retired in 2005.
In retirement, Apostolos enjoyed his daily walks, spy novels, old westerns, watching soccer and spending time with his grandchildren. He made Greek coffee every afternoon for himself & Mary to enjoy with a pastry or two. He was notorious for his fondness for Costco apple pie. He had an enduring love of fabric, clothing, and all things haberdashery related.
Apostolos is survived by Maria, his wife of 60 years, his daughter Anna, son Photios, son-in-law Paul, daughter-in-law Natalie, three grandchildren Elizabeth, John and Apostolos ("AJ"), brother Alex, sister-in-law Anna, 9 nieces and nephews and loving friends.
