Obituary for Spencer Bartley Cox

Spencer Bartley Cox passed away peacefully on Sunday November 24th, 2019, surrounded by family. He was born on May 31, 1962, in New York, NY to Robert Bartley and Maria Francisca Polic Cox. Spencer is survived by his mother, Maria F. Cox, his wife of 24 years, Denise Digby Cox, daughters Heather Renee Cox and Marta Maria Cox and grandchildren Jocelyn, Jayce and Juliette. He is also survived by his sister, Jennifer Alexis Cox.

At a very young age, Spencer discovered his love of Porsches and from the moment he got his hands on an engine, he was hooked. Spencer’s second and most abiding love was his passion for and commitment to his wife, Denise. Together, they created a family and a community of love, support and generosity, emblematic in his business, Speedsport Tuning, and now so clearly abundant as they surround his survivors in this time of grief.

Through his sheer genius in diagnosing high performance automobiles, his loyalty and fierce determination to his customers, Spencer built a robust business and one the most successful race teams in the Porsche Club of America. His grit and engineering prowess were widely known and the refrain would often be heard at the track, ‘Where’s Spence’? Spencer was equally gifted behind the wheel and holds several long-standing track records as well as numerous Porsche Club Worker’s Choice Awards of which he was the most proud. Recently, an award was created by the PCA Connecticut Valley Region to be given each year in Spencer’s name. Spencer was a long time PCA instructor and the award will be given to the year’s student displaying Spencer’s ‘personality and dedication’. His multifaceted interests included being an avid, incredibly graceful skier (old school but lightning fast) and a Master Marksman, a talent which he discovered in high school and he continued to perfect well into his illness.

Spencer was an extraordinarily unique individual known to all whose lives he touched for his bold and sometimes brash style of doing everything in life to the absolute fullest. Most would agree that once you were accepted into his confidence, you were automatically family - and there was nothing he wouldn’t do for you. With Spence, there was no ‘governor cap’, no braking before the turns, no holding back in anything he did, not on the track nor in the way he loved his wife, daughters and family - with his whole self.
