Obituary for Maria G. Zurzola (Lorenti)

Maria (Marietta) Giuseppa Lorenti Zurzola, 87, of Rocky Hill, CT and a former long-time resident of Stamford, CT passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, January 27, 2019 surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Bivongi, Italy on May 29, 1931 to the late Ferdinando and Elvira Drago Lorenti.
Maria is survived by her devoted children, James Zurzola of Bloomfield, CT, Rose Corcoran and her husband Matthew of Stamford, CT, Mark Zurzola and his wife Andrea of Wethersfield, CT as well as five grandchildren, Erin Marie, Matthew Nicholas and James Aiden Corcoran, Olivia Rose and Zachary Andrew Zurzola. Also surviving are three brothers and one sister who reside in Italy.
Besides her parents, Maria was predeceased by her husband Nicholas Zurzola and her sister Lisa Lorenti.
Maria came to the United States in 1958 after marrying Nicholas and worked for many years at Excelsior Hardware in Stamford before retiring in 1991. She then became a loving caregiver for her grandchildren and many children of family friends who treasured her as their own Nonna. Nonna loved her five grandchildren very much and spending time with them was her joy in life. Attending many of their school events and sporting activities made her very happy as well.
Besides her grandchildren her passion was gardening and cooking. She spent many hours growing vegetables at her Stamford home through the years and then in Wethersfield when she and Nick moved there in 2003. She was a fabulous cook making amazing traditional Italian specialties as well as her signature dishes, meatballs and eggplant parmesan. There was much joy at family events when Mom did the “catering”.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford on Thursday, January 31, 2018 from 3:00-7:00 PM. A Prayer service will be celebrated at the funeral home on Friday, February 1, 2019 at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow at St. John’s RC Cemetery, Darien.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Maria’s memory to Hartford Hospital’s Center for Advanced Heart Failure, 80 Seymour Street, Ste 208, Hartford, CT 06102.
