Obituary for John S. Geas

John S.  Geas
John S. Geas passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his side on July 11, 2017 in Stamford, CT at the age of 94 years old.
He was born on March 18, 1923 in Geneva, NY to the late Speros and Olga Markas Geas.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anastasia Giftos Geas, his brother in law Chris Giftos, his three daughters Joanne Romas, her husband Thomas, Pamela Nanos, her husband Christopher and Christine Efstathiades and her husband Harry. He is also survived by his 6 grandchildren, Christina Nanos, Nicole Kazantzidis, her husband Savva, Alexis Nanos, Dean Efstathiades, Peter Romas and Jennifer Nanos as well as 2 great-granddaughters; Sophia and Isabella.
He was predeceased by his sister Bessie Pakes, his brother in law Dimitri Giftos and his great-granddaughter Hailey Smith.
John served in the Marine Corps from 1941 to 1946 and participated in the amphibious assaults on Guadalcanal, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima all part of the United States island hoping campaign. He enlisted for 4 years and after fighting through an extremely tough invasion, he got promoted to the rank of Master Sergeant in the Marine Division where he was in command of an armored platoon.
He is now a decorated WWII veteran and was finally given his medals from Senator Blumenthal on October 9, 2015 where he declared that day to be John Geas day. He received medals for Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze campaign stars, World War II Victory Medal, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.
A funeral service will be celebrated on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 10AM at the Church of the Archangels, 1527 Bedford Street, Stamford, CT 06905. Interment will follow at Fairfield Memorial Park Cemetery at 230 Oaklawn Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905.
Family and friends may call at the Nicholas F. Cognetta Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Myrtle Avenue, Stamford, on Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 4-8PM with a Trisagion service to be held at 7PM.

The family would like to thank Dr. Katsigiannis, his caregivers, and hospital staff for their constant dedication to John’s care.
